Brookline Golf Course - Brookline, MA
Potential. That is what this piece of property has. Luckily the Park and Recreation Commission approved a landscape master plan under the direction of Mungeam Golf Design. Improvements include restoration work of this Wayne Stiles and John Van Kleek original design, improved drainage (one of the top priorities), fairway expansion, tree removal, bunker work, and green expansion. Hemlock Grill in the history boasting clubhouse provides a great environment with live music and outside patio overlooking the course and putting green.
Wayne Stiles and Van Kleek were chosen over legendary architects Donald Ross and William Flynn in 1930 to design this course, which was opened in 1933. A wonderful landscape for golf with bold landforms, rock formations, and contours that resemble those of The Country Club which is the fellow neighbor of Brookline Golf Course. This is a highly anticipated restoration as the outcome has potential to be one of the best public golf courses in New England. The holes and layout that lie now are magnificent, and with tree removal to reveal the beautiful landscape and added streams that cross and play along key holes, will also improve drainage, which has been a problem for years here, will make it a premier public course destination.
History is felt on the property with TCC next door and it being the home town of Francis Ouimet. The restoration work with fairway expansion, green expansion, and bunker work towards Stiles and Van Kleek's original vision will make this history felt even more. Public golf deserves the project of this public muni gem in Boston to expose them to a golden age design on a bold piece of property.
