Engineers Country Club, Roslyn, NY
A Herbert Strong design followed by a 1921 remodel by the great Devereux Emmet. If you want to talk about golf courses that have scale, this course deserves to be in the conversation especially with its array of crazy unique green complexes with giant contours, and giant sizes. Rolling, undulating fairways and elevation changes are throughout the layout with some blind tee shots as well as downhill approach shots like the par 4 16th with the green in a quarry like area dropped below the fairway. Greens slope away from you, two tiered, front to back, or just have straight up crazy undulations.
The 14th hole, a 95-125 yard par 3, is possibly one of the scariest short par 3’s in New York. It’s called the “2 or 20” hole after Bobby Jones and Gene Sarazen both took double figures on this hole in a match in the first international golf competition on American soil.
A natural amphitheater finisher much like Olympic and Riviera, the drivable par 4 7th with a punchbowl like green, and the giant undulating/tiered green of the par 4 1st.
A truly special place on Long Island that Devereux Emmet cemented his hands on like the many courses on the island. It’s hard to find greens like this anywhere else, and they roll terrific during the summers. A fun course that requires artistry and creativity and boasts a lot of history looking back on the tournaments and names it has hosted. Imagine if the public were able to access golf courses like this and experience the undulations and quirkyness of golf to better understand it's identity.
