Granliden on Sunapee, Sunapee, NH.
One of the most underrated 9 holers out there that just needs some more money and love put into it for better drainage and conditions. For the most part, this 1924 Walter Travis design stands the test of time as many of its quirks won’t fly in today’s modern architecture. Punch bowls, blind tee shots, humps, bumps and shelves for greens, and a phenomenal piece of land with a great view of Lake Sunapee and Mount Sunapee. The fact that nobody has talked about this place is beyond me. It screams golden age golf architecture and is some great fun even with the greens rolling at a 5 or 6. Hole 6 (first picture) is undoubtedly a top 10 holes I have played where you are teeing off down into a rolling left to right fairway then approaching to a crazy good Walter Travis green that has a giant hump in the front quarter to make for some fun and interesting pins. Many people can learn a lot about golf architecture from this Walter Travis gem who redesigned the original 9 holes which was designed by Alexander Findlay in 1899. This course simply feels like you walk back in time with its timeless design and the phenomenal scenery and aurora that surrounds you as you walk up and down the hills.
