Lake Sunapee Country Club, in New London, NH is a 1927 Donald Ross design. The club has done a terrific job at making sure almost all of Ross’ features are still present, even when it comes to cross bunkering that serves as aim points off tee shots or intimidation (seen on many classic Rose designs). Very wide fairways and entryways to the greens make it a very fun course to play especially when it’s playing firm and fast. Classic Ross green’s that slope back to front for the most part with phenomenal undulations on the edges of the greens that make it essential to hit the green. When you miss the green, it usually involves being in a runoff area around the green where you must chip or putt up some swale, or if you are in the rough it can be a hard up and down to a green that slopes away from you.
A creek splits the fairway on holes 1, 3 and 7, requiring even the longest hitters stuck in between clubs off the tee as a long iron is usually in hand for the approach. Great set of par 3’s with the short 4th that has many internal and exterior undulations, along with the 240-yard 12th, and mid length 15th with a big thumbprint green. Fairly flat course but some interesting rolling fairways and mounding throughout the course and Ross showed how he can make flat holes interesting. Overall, the club has done a fantastic job at preserving and restoring the course's history and a good course to find some classic Ross holes.
