Sconset Golf Course, Nantucket, MA
Established in 1899, this property gives unparalleled island golf vibes with a walk through history. From the cozy clubhouse and porch along with a small comfy bar that can create a memorable golfing experience.
No irrigation in the fairways makes it play true to its links design. Like a lot of old school courses, the par on the course does not matter with its long par 3’s, short par 4’s, and a quirky dog leg right par 5. There are simple and small features that make this place so great and give a golden age feel like the 2 bunkers fronting 8 green and the creek running in front to an angled green on hole 7.
Sconset is a representation of why 9 holers do not need irrigation if they have a thoughtful design. The public will be exposed to a links golf style and architecture they are not use to and could fall more in love with the game that way. A lot of the public amateurs have trouble getting the ball in the air, and giving opportunity for them to use the ground game will make them become more creative in how they play the game and explore more options when hitting shots.
More courses like Sconset need to be made possible for the public to play. A laid back vibe where anyone can go play for a reasonable rate and be able to play a well though out designed course with quirks that most public courses don’t have. Only having water for greens and tees also reduce golfers expectations and they will soon realize golf is more fun being played with multiple options rather than just having forced carries and only being able to play golf in the air. I wonder what their annual expenses are for golf course maintenance given no irrigation, and it plays a lot better than courses that pour money into water, pesticides, and fertilizers for their fairways.
